Hello! Welcome to the therianthropy topic.

Disclaimer: If you've come here to say hateful things about alterhumans, therians, otherkin, etc then I'll politely ask you to leave. Discussing the validity of or hating on identities and beliefs of other people is against the community guidelines, and any such posts are to be reported for such reason. If what somebody believes or thinks doesn't affect you in any way, then it's fine. Let them be themselves. (Ps: just because it's ‘cringey’ or ‘annoying’ doesnt count as a reason either because you are completely able to avoid such things.)

Rules for this topic
- Any discussion on inappropriate topics will not be tolerated and they will be reported.
- Any hate on therianthropy or any other beliefs or identity will be reported.
- Do not claim other people's art or stories as yours.

If you just happened to stumble across this topic by pure accident or clicked from curiosity and don't know what a therian is, then you're in luck! I'll help answer any questions you may have.

What is a therian?
A therian is someone who believes they're an animal in anyway but physically. Some examples include mentally and spiritually. This can range from believing you had a past life as an animal, that your soul is an animal, and various other reasons! We are still aware of the fact that we are human.

FAQ about therianthropy
Q: Do you use litter boxes?
A: No

Q: Do you eat pet food?
A: No

Q: Are you furries?
A: Therians alone arent furries, but some are both as being a furry is a hobby and something you can quit, while therianthropy is something you're born with and cannot quit. Not all therians are furries.

Border_Collies37 wrote:

Q: Do you bark at people?
A: No. We’re not rabid or feral. Some like to learn to make the noises of animals but we don’t go around meowing at people.

Q: How do you become a therian?
A: It’s not a choice/a voluntary identity, although there is something known as copinglink that involves voluntarily identifying as an animal to cope with something. Links are also valid, but different from therians!

Q: So you think you can shapeshift?
A: No.

What are therians and what are they not?

Therians are:
- Creative
- Brave
- Valid
- Believes they're an animal any way but physically.

Therians aren't:
- Furries
- Invalid
- Just masks
- Just quadrobics

What theriotypes are valid?
Every theriotype is valid! Even if they have a wolf, fox, and cat theriotype. Just because their theriotype is common doesnt make them fake or invalid. And if their theriotype is “rarer” than others, that doesn't make them better than other therians. All theriotypes are equal. Same goes for the amount of theriotypes; there's no real limit to how many you can have and you're still valid if you are a lot of theriotypes!
(ps: a fake therian knows that they're faking. If a therian truly believes they are one, but aren't and are just misinformed, then try to politely inform them of the actual information.)

Therianthropy and alterhumanity is a wide spectrum. Nothing makes you more or less of a therian, and you are valid

What do I post here?
You can post many therian related things! (You can be any alterhuman to post too, dw) Such things include:

Some therians might also be furries, but it’s not related!

Therianthropy is spiritually or psychologically identifying as an animal. That could mean thinking you lived a past life as one, that your soul is one, that your brain kinda imprinted on one in some way, etc.

That's fine to think as long as you don't actively go hunting us down just to hate on us and as long as you keep your hateful opinions to yourself. /nbr

I have a random tip for people who want to make yarn tails;
I’d suggest using the loops & threads facets yarn, if you can find it somewhere near you. I’ve been using that yarn since I first started making yarn tails, and they have beautiful colors + brush out really well. :3

A tip for maskmakers, though- if you use the paper base cat masks, always cut the eye holes bigger. You can also glue yarn strings vertically over the eyes, and then you can see through the slats in between and they still look amazing, without mesh!

It also helps to line the inside with some thin fabric and maybe eva foam beneath it to make it more comfortable and form fitting.

Make sure to add (if you haven’t) that owning gear does not make you a therian. Therianthropy is an identity.

I do not understand therian ? I had heard of a person previously who had multiple ‘theriotypes’, including one of the character, ‘Jayfeather’, from the book series Warriors. It just sounds like a fictive to me. And I also hear of ‘switching’ (people supposedly randomly acting/attaining the personality of their theriotypes?) being not too uncommon.

There is also the ‘phantom switch’ phenomenon which I hear of, which apparently includes feeling/perceiving their theriotype's animal appendages, such as their tails or ears. Would this be considered believing they are an animal physically? (even if only partially, that is.)

I do find it peculiar how this trend/phenomenon has spread so quickly, though I suspect it may be due to it being previously repressed before the concept became more accepted, similar to transgenderism and other such things.

If anyone wishes to answer, may you tell me how you discovered you used to be/are spiritually/mentally/etc. an animal?
Do you find they have any defined characteristics other than appearance?
How can you tell they are there (if possible)?

As to the warrior cat character, that’s called being a fictionkin. It’s like Therianthropy, but with fictional characters. Otherkin is also similar, but with mythical creatures. Also, Therianthropy or any of the previously mentioned are not trends. I believe it’s like lgbtq+ or transgenderism in the way you mentioned. As more people found out about it, more people were bound to become it. It also gradually became more accepted as valid, and it helped others understand who they were.
