Transcript Workshop!
Transcript.
Definition:
(noun) tran·script /ˈtran(t)skript/
a written or printed version of material originally presented in another medium.
Transcripts are used to convert other mediums into text. You can transcribe a movie, recording, or even a meeting. Here are five steps to write a transcript.
Ask Yourself Questions.
When writing out a transcript, just as writing anything else, it is important to ask yourself questions. What is the purpose of writing a transcript? Are you trying to translate the medium so that it is easier for readers to understand? What are the main points of the transcript? Are you transcribing word for word or summarizing?
Ask questions that give you a basic idea of what you are putting into a script and how you are writing it.
Choose Your Medium!
So, now you’ve got the basic idea it’s time to choose what you’ll be transcribing! For this weekly, you’ll simply be transcribing your own words with a partner. But once you’ve chosen your medium, you’re ready to turn it into a transcript!
Medium Examples Include:
- Recordings
- Videos
- Movies
- Interviews
- Conversations
- And more!
Formatting Your Transcript.
When writing your transcript, make sure to insert the name of the person speaking and then the speech right after, much like your regular script.
(For this example I will be transcribing this scene from the anime Spy x Family.)
Yor Briar No, I mustn’t. If I think like this, someone will eventually figure out that I’m an
assassin. I must learn to be more normal.
Anya Forger A spy… An assassin… I’m… So excited!
Nonverbal Communication.
Just like in a script, transcripts indicate what happens in the medium.
Jessica
{Looks away from Ryan, gasps, runs to the left wing.}
Instead of describing movement, transcribers describe nonverbal communication. Nonverbal communication is simply communication through expressions, gestures, body language, and the tone of one’s voice.
Let’s take the previous example and add some NVC!
Yor Briar {frowns} No, I mustn’t. If I think like this, someone will eventually figure out that
I’m an assassin. I must learn to be more normal.
Anya Forger {gasps, eyes widen} A spy… An assassin… I’m…{pause} So excited! {eye
sparkles}
Notice how I used a pause in Anya’s line. Indicating pauses in the transcription helps reflect the real medium.
Proofread!
Once you’re finished, make sure to read over your transcript once more while playing your medium. Your medium might be any of the ones listed previously!
Weekly!
Now, for this weekly, you will need a partner! (You are now allowed to have partners from any cabin!) Both of you will be working together to write 400 word transcript interviews, correctly formatted and all. 200 words for each person.
Choose a topic that the interview will be about! Here are some random ones. ;)
- Opinion on Taylor's new album!
- As an ARMY, how do you feel about the recent news? (Sad. Jin's song was great!)
- What's your opinion on pineapple on pizza?
- Changes you would make to SWC. (#BringBackMyth)
- Favorite parts of your SWC experience.
- Why mangoes are the superior fruit.
- Debate on which cabin is most likely to win. (No bias.)
- and more!
Here's an example, but of course, make sure to write 200 words (min.) each, amounting to 400 words (min.) in total!
I hope you enjoy this daily and my workshop helped you touch the surface of transcripts! <3
EDIT: clarification on how to do the interviews– you will have TWO interviews, one where you are being interviewed by your partner, and the other where you are interviewing your partner. Each interview should be 200 words to a total of 400 words between both of you. The ANSWERS are what count as words here, not the questions, so your interviewer should continue to ask questions until you have at least 200 words worth of answers to transcribe.
