Forumoji: Forum-style unicode emojis!
Windows hasn't gotten 16 yet(#2158)Apple and Google are the only ones (that I know of) that have released an emoji set for Unicode 16! Google jumped the gun and was pretty early this year! (I still think switching to Google Noto Color emojis for the site would be an amazing idea!)(#2157)Looks like I accidentally capitalized the filenames for those emojis. I use VS Code on Windows to edit the waitlist, and Windows is case-insensitive, so I never noticed the issue. Should be fixed now.(#2156)This is amazing! By the way, what happened to the recycling and chestnut emojis? Something happened with their previews on the GitHub.
I've finally updated the waitlist to include all the new emojis contributed since July.
I opted to omit the sweat droplets emoji—people generally seem to agree that, given its typical usage, it's probably not fit for Scratch.
@ilovestories' emojis were exported at twice the typical resolution due to a quirk in the Scratch editor. I've done the best I can to tweak these so they scale back down properly to 15x15, and removed some artifacts caused by converting from vector to bitmap.
You can find the waitlist here: https://github.com/CocoTheMii/fmji-waitlist
While I'm at it, I noticed that the Cubeupload link for the newspaper emoji is broken. For some reason, it can take a while for u.cubeupload.com links to start working—but it seems that this one never fixed itself. I've reuploaded the emoji, so we'll see if the problem goes away.
Also, I saw that someone contributed a “face with bags under eyes” emoji. I'd like to add it to the waitlist, but Forumoji needs to be updated to Emoji 16.0 first.

Apple hasn't released their designs yet—that likely won't happen until early next year.

(#2167)So unless we switch, we'll be waiting around for twemoji to get updated… I remember last time we looked into this, the only barrier was the variance in naming scheme between the current set and Google's emojis. I'm sure that wouldn't be TOO hard to work around though. If someone tells me in general how to do it, I can make a PR!I believe Google is the only provider that's updated their emojis thus far. (#2168)You can check PR #70 to get an idea. We had to switch to a fork of Twemoji at one point because development on the official version had stopped.(#2167)So unless we switch, we'll be waiting around for twemoji to get updated… I remember last time we looked into this, the only barrier was the variance in naming scheme between the current set and Google's emojis. There are a few differences in how Noto Emoji organizes its assets compared to Twemoji.
- Every filename starts with “emoji_u”
- The codepoint “FE0F” is omitted from all character sequences
I decided to try this out with my own fork, and this is what I came up with. Took some experimenting, as you can see; I'm not very familiar with TypeScript.
It works, but it's pretty hacky. I'm not sure this is a desirable solution.

There are a few differences in how Noto Emoji organizes its assets compared to Twemoji.Forumoji uses a normalized format for character sequences specifically to line up with Twemoji. In order to make it compatible with Noto without breaking compatibility with existing Cubeupload links, we need to use the Noto format for displaying placeholder emojis on the website, and the normalized format for everything else.

Some emoji that need to be redrawn:
Astronaut U+1F9D1 U+200D U+1F680: gender-neutral one has visor up on literally all platforms, and male and female (U+1F468 U+200D U+1F680 and U+1F469 U+200D U+1F680, respectively) just look goofy compared to the others in the People and Body category.
Detective U+1F575: Again, doesn't use the Man, Woman, or Person emoji for reference, and is actually done by the same person as the Astronaut emoji (floppasyay).
Pancakes U+1F95E: They look overcooked.
Steaming Bowl U+1F35C: Where is the steam, exactly?
Cheese Wedge U+1F9C0: The holes lack outlines.
Jar U+1FAD9: The outline does not show up on a dark background, maybe make it a light blue?
Medical Symbol U+2695: No outline
Musical Keyboard U+1F3B9: Wrong outline color, but it also takes up the whole emoji so not necessary
Telephone U+260E: No shading
Top Hat U+1F3A9: No shading + No easy distinction between ribbon and rest of hat
Magic Wand U+1FA84: No shading + Ends of wand are hard to see on a light background.
Ring Buoy U+1F6DF: No shading
There might be more, but this is as many as I could count. They do look good, they just don't fit in with the style of the rest of the emoji.

Astronaut (U+1F9D1 200D 1F680)

Woman Astronaut (U+1F469 200D 1F680)

I will say, I don't think every emoji needs shading. Not every emoji benefits from it—especially black emojis, like Magic Wand.

The challenge is adding an outline without affecting the perceived width of the white ends.
Adding a black border to the white ends will either make them appear too small on a dark background, or too wide on a light background.
Come to think of it, maybe shading would fix this.
