I've actually thought extensively about this.
Here's my thought:
They want to have millions of comments, and then they can make somebody really happy by replying to them or following them.

Humans evolved (with a few exceptions) to make other people happy.

The other thought is that they like the feeling that people like them and enjoy them.

Ok heres some points: some people want followers because they want attention, they don't wanna be treated like a stick in the mud. they ask on projects to love, fav, and follow

Point 2- They want more messages in their inbox, so they could read them.

Point 3: They want to show EVERY scratcher their projects

Point 4- None else
