Ohohohoho! Prepare the tissues, you'll need them.Wait until you get to the next one, Turnabout Goodbyes. That is my FAVORITE one. It made me cry :') I just got the Ace Attorney Trilogy! I've been playing it for a while and I think it's really fun, and I love busting criminals.
So far, I'm on Turnabout Samurai.

Dumb little ramble. May include minor spoilers.
The more I think about it, the more I love Phoenix's backstory.
Specifically the class trial. (because I haven't really caught up enough on the rest of it and this is about the class trial, not Dahlia.)
So, from an outsider's perspective, it's really simple. He was accused falsely, no one believed he was innocent, someone unexpected stuck up for him.
This would have been absolutely traumatizing from a fifth-grader's point of view, especially in a tightly knit community like a classroom where reputation is everything. If Edgeworth hadn't stepped in, Smol Phoenix's life would have been basically over. Even if the fuss died down, there would always be that undercurrent of accusation and shame, and that would have stayed with Phoenix for the rest of his life.
It's not as dramatic and traumatizing as the Fey drama, or Gregory Edgeworth's death, or whatever other backstory I'm forgetting, please forgive me, I am still sleep deprived. It's still a huge event in Phoenix's life.
It's also relatable. Phoenix is an interesting protagonist because he has nuanced backstory and motivations, because he has a distinctive personality, but he's also very carefully crafted to be easy for the player to become him. His reactions to events and his thought process are all things we would do in that situation (or would like to do, my boy has a razor sharp wit that I can't match). He is at once utilising the power of wish fulfilment and self-insert, and he does it * well.
His backstory takes this a step further. I think there is not a single human on the planet who doesn't relate to the feeling of being falsely accused. We have all felt Phoenix's pain at some point in our lives. We understand him.
If his backstory had been ‘My parents died in a plane crash and Edgeworth saved my life by pulling me out of the rubble’, we would have felt bad for him, but we wouldn't have related to him as much (unless our parents were dead and we had a near-death experience at some point)
This whole thing was prompted because I read a fanfiction that went something along the lines of:
Phoenix told her about the time he was accused of theft by a bunch of fifth graders, which Mia has to admit, must have been very scary at the time. Not everyone has a missing mother and a screwed-up village hierarchy to be the source of their trauma.
I didn't like how it belittled Phoenix's story. You have to understand that it was very scary, it was absolutely terrifying, because he was ten years old and in danger of losing everyone's trust because of something he didn't even do.
That's huge. That impacts the rest of your time at that school, if not your life. The emotional reprecussions from that? No joke. If Edgeworth hadn't stepped in, it would have been a disaster.
anyway that's it
I don't know how much sense this makes.

Never thought about that. Really neat observation. I know half of the experiences you have as a child impact the rest of your life, so you're definitely right about that. Dumb little ramble. May include minor spoilers.

WHAT KIND OF FANFICTION BELITTLES SOMEONE'S BACKSTORY CAUSE IT'S SMALL?? I'M SERIOUS- THESE ARE THE SAME KINDS OF PEOPLE WHO CALL IRIS OR GREGORY BORING CAUSE THEY'RE MORE NORMAL. JUST WHY?!

It was a very Mia focused story, basically her thoughts and feelings while meeting Phoenix, but I was annoyed by Mia going “wow that must been so traumatizing being accused by a bunch of ten year olds, even if it wasn't as bad as my backstory”Never thought about that. Really neat observation. I know half of the experiences you have as a child impact the rest of your life, so you're definitely right about that. Dumb little ramble. May include minor spoilers.

It felt very dismissive on the whole, which might have just been the writer's specification of “a bunch of fifth graders” and so I felt obligated to wordvom aboit it
putting aside the fact that neither Iris nor Gregory are normal, calling someone boring for being normal has the same energy as calling someone weird because they're not ‘normal’.

So I finished Dual Destinies today, excluding the DLC case which I'll start soon. I'd post my overall thoughts on the game here like I planned too but I kinda… don't know. Like, I still loved playing it but my thoughts on this one were a lot more mixed then they were for Apollo Justice.
I will say though, I hate youtube thumbnails. I got spoiled on the ending twist for Turnabout for Tomorrow and I'm a little annoyed since (spoiler:) due to seeing a thumbnail talking about “the phantom reveal” with Fulbright in the thumbnail, I was mildly suspicious of him throughout the whole playthrough, so the reveal of him being the phantom I worked out much before the actual reveal since the pieces that were put into place didn't go over my head like they probably would have had I been unspoiled. I'm a little annoyed since the reveal was really well done and surprisingly makes perfect sense in the moment.
That being said, I feel the twists were something the game as a whole did really well. Like, they're very unpredictable but they make sense in hindsight, I feel they used the theme of turning a case upside down really well in this game.
Though on the other end I feel the difficulty of the game was a lot lower then other AA games on average, there were a lot of details about pieces of evidence that just jumped out at my immediately but the game was trying to keep a surprise (the main one I can think of right now being, spoiler for Turnabout for Tomorrow: the shard of the moon rock being in the image of the remains of the bomb. Like, for one, what else is that image meant to convey, and for two it's very obvious in that image for me. I only got one game over and that was in Turnabout Academy, on one of the final prompts nonetheless. Almost a perfect streak.
Plus, I feel like the villain plots in this game were a lot more, how do I say this, complex? Like, even the jokier villains have super in-depth plots that make stuff like Rise from the Ashes seem simple in comparason. I'm not saying this as a positive or a negative, just something I noticed.
Another thing I noticed, while I prefer the sprites, I ended up quite liking the 3D models. Not much to say upon that, but I will say that aside from the final one I feel like the breakdowns being a lot longer and more animated kinda takes away from the punchiness they had, plus the models being more animated as a whole takes away the impact they had. I dunno, they have less of an impact, plus Blackquill explaining the motives instead of the villains themselves was a change I'm not really a fan of.
Lastly that I'll bring up right now, this game kinda redeemed Apollo's character for me. I was pretty mixed on him in his own game ironically enough but I feel like his interactions with Phoenix and Athena were great and especially his arc in the latter half of the game here I really like and it made me really appreciate him as a character.
Huh, I guess I had more to say about this game then I thought. I don't think I've seen any major spoilers for Spirit of Justice so woo!
TLDR, I had pretty mixed opinions on the game overall compared to the other AA games though I still really like it. Just annoyed I got spoiled on the biggest twist. Ironically it's almost an exact reverse of Apollo Justice, in that one I was really postitive througout everything except the ending and this one I think they nailed the ending but had kinda mixed feelings until, like, half way through case 3.
Oh yeah I just remembered one more thing, my favourite part of the whole game was The way Turnabout Academy very convincingly sets up Hugh as the villain, just like how the games set up their actual villains before the final trail, before the shock reveal that it actually wasn't him and Means gave him the faked video tape. I suspected Means from the get go, he seemed like the perfect character to pin it all on since Hugh seemed like a red herring at first (as well as Robin to a lesser extent), but right before the final trail I finally believed he wasn't the villain, just not a good person either with his mindset. Only for the reveal that it actually was him to come down and hit me like a ton of bricks anyway. It kinda blew my mind how good the execution on that bit was. Plus, before you accuse him, he doesn't have any obvious breakdown tells or gimmicks outside of being statue-like and his smile, but as soon as you actually accuse him and he brings out the chalkboard it's like, yeah, this is gonna be a fun one to take down. Very fun gimmick for a witness, I was a big fan. Yes I do defend the third cases in these games quite a lot but this and Serenade were just really good cases in my opinion. I still prefer Serenade but this one slaps too.

The only thing I know about Spirit of Justice (I haven't played it yet) is that Apollo has a big scene. I don't want any spoilers but I'm super excited for that now that I really like Apollo as a character after DD. I bring this up as the “I'm Fine!” theme (this one) he has in DD supposedly plays in that scene during the comments and if it beats his big scene where that plays in DD I think I might actually cry.
I say this as I think that theme might be my new favourite song in the series, it's such a good version of Apollo's theme with a big emotional hit with that piano solo. It's so good. Like, how does this series's music always hit so well?
I'm probably going to take a break once I finish Turnabout Reclaimed, I'll likely finish that final trial tomorrow, but I am looking forward to it. Let's just hope I don't get spoilered again.
I do find it very ironic that DD had a way better arc for Apollo imo then he got in his entire own game.

Apollo's objection theme has to in my three absolute favorite objection themes, and then they remixed it, and made it hit even harder. Yeah, it's probably one of my most favorite themes in the whole series. The only thing I know about Spirit of Justice (I haven't played it yet) is that Apollo has a big scene. I have a feeling that with the Ace Attorney series ports and now with the AAI ports they're trying to market the series more and get more fans before announcing AA7. I just have a strong feeling that's what they're doing and hoping it'll get announced soon!
