SWC Weekly #3
Hello everyone! Welcome to the third weekly this SWC! This weekly is themed around choose your own adventure stories - we're going to do some activities first, then write our own!
You may not start working on this weekly until 12:01AM on the 18th of July EDT (until it's displayed as weekly in the main cabin, basically). If you find this before then - good job! But you can't start yet
Before we begin (optional) - Research
If you're not familiar with choose your own adventures or itching to read one, you can browse lots of scratch choose your own adventures here!
Task one - Setting the Scene
In Choose Your Own Adventure stories, it's very important to set the scene and use lots of detail. The player needs to make a choice - and to make that choice well, you want them to really understand the situation. So it's important to give a lot of detail surrounding where the character is, what's happening to them at the moment, how they're feeling and what their options are. Write a 300 word scene that could be right before a choice in your choose your own adventure story. You could include the choice or leave it out.
This task does not have to be in second person - although it might feel more natural to you!
Here's an example I've written for you (although it's shorter than yours should be - I was in a rush!)
Task two - Second Person
Not all, but most choose your own adventure stories are written in second person. This is because the reader is making the decisions, so you want them to feel as much like the main character as possible. Plan the main character of your story, then write a 200 word scene in second person, focusing on portraying the main character in a natural way. Here's an example (again, yours needs to be longer than this!)
Task three - Planning
Choose your own adventures have lots of choices - so it's important to plan beforehand! Make a diagram or plan of some kind where you plan out the rough scenes and choices in your story. There's no word limit, but you need to plan out all the paths in your story. Your story will need at least 4 endings, and the reader will need to make at least two choices no matter what path they take - so you'll need at least three choices. Here's an example:
Task four - Writing
Time to write! Write a 1000 word choose your own adventure story. You need at least 4 endings and the reader needs to always make at least two choices before finishing.
You could share this as a project (for instance using @AmazingMech2418's choose your own adventure template or by coding your own) or in the forums (for instance utilising multiple posts and linking between them for choices), or something else completely!
Sharing - Criteria to get points
This weekly is worth 3000 points for your cabin. Here's what you need to get points:
- A scene using lots of description
- A scene in second person
- A photo or transcript of your planning - you can put this in a scratch project or use an image uploader such as cubeupload.com
- A choose your own adventure with 4 different endings and at least 2 choices per path the reader can take.
- Complete this weekly by 11:59PM on the 24th of July, EDT time zone and post it in the main cabin!
(you have to read the whole thing to find out how long each part needs to be )
You will have 1500 words in total.
Also, a note - if you could include word counts for each of the writing parts, it would save leaders a lot of time when adding your weekly! For instance:

Cornered. You stand, helpless, in the corner as Euryale steps closer to you. You back away further, trembling. Your heart is pounding, your mind racing. Behind you, you can feel the prickle of the tough vines tangled over the fence. Thorns pierce through your shirt, and you can feel beads of blood running down your back. Next to you, you see a thick wall of dense bushes. You stare at them, panicked. They’re thick, impossibly dense and tangled together. You’d never get through them, especially not with the prickles. Your only hope is the wall.
“Come, my child,” she lilts, turning your head. You jump, just catching yourself from punching her as your fight or flight response triggers, and know that you need to make your decision now. You have to fight your instincts to not be pulled towards her, not to look at those mesmerising snakes of hers. “Come, child. I’ll forgive you, we can compromise,” she lilts again. What do you do?
A) Climb the fence
B) Go with her
Task two - Second Person
Not all, but most choose your own adventure stories are written in second person. This is because the reader is making the decisions, so you want them to feel as much like the main character as possible. Plan the main character of your story, then write a 200 word scene in second person, focusing on portraying the main character in a natural way. Here's an example (again, yours needs to be longer than this!)
You run for what feels like hours. The thud of your heart relaxes as you slow to a jog, weighing up your options. You think you’ve lost her – you must’ve, right? You wouldn’t be here if she knew where you were. Now what do you do?
You look around at the plants near you, trying to get your bearings. You have no idea where you are, but you think you know which way to go. The plants look greener through that passage, the one with blackberry bushes arching over it and soft moss on the ground. It must mean water, perhaps even somewhere to hide. Tentatively, you creep down the passageway. The moss feels spongy underfoot, but you cautiously continue on. Soon, the passageway opens out into a secluded clearing, where you should be hidden from view. “Thanks, garden,” you whisper despite knowing it can’t hear you.
