July SWC Workshop || Relationships

part zero:
before we get into the meat of this, firstly i have wise words of wisdom from the very cool evi (@chromesthesia) - “love is a choice, not a feeling”. yes, people feel attraction - whether romantic or platonic - but it's whether they decide to act on it and make it something more that determines that it's love. throughout this workshop, i'll talk a lot about the choices that people make in regards to who they are in relationships with.
let's get started!!

part one: family members
think of a family. it can be your family, it can be a fictional family - it doesn't even have to be a family by blood! (families by choice are *chefs kiss*)
now, think about what makes them a family. is it the way they care about each other? is it the relaxed ease they have with each other? alternatively, is it the personal barbs they hurl at each other?
every family is different. however, most of them share one thing: familiarity (look it even looks like family)! family members know possibly the most about each other, more than anyone else. ideally, this information would be used for good - to help whoever's in trouble - but that isn't always the case (evil family members be like
in the cases where they do love each other, though, think about how they show it. this will be a common theme throughout this, but think about love languages.
some people show their love through touch - hugging and kissing. some people show their love through their words. some people show their love through what they do for the other person - gifts, or little helpful things, or trying to make the world a better place for them.
anyways, back to the point!
how do these family members play off each other? are they warm and fuzzy and there for support? do they give light-hearted teasing to show they care? what roles do they play for each other? all of these questions are worth thinking about.
(note for families by choice: i'll have a little note in the “close friends” section about it - so look out for that!)

part two: acquaintances + distant friends
this is the class for people who you know, but you don't know. they can be friends of friends, friends of parents, classmates you've never talked to, or anyone who you have talked to but not had an actual deep conversation yet. (like, you have been moving your mouth but nothing of importance is coming out.)
these are usually characterized by awkwardness and forced propriety (although some rare people play greatly with strangers). this is a great way to deepen your character - if your character is kind to their friends, are they kind to people they don't really know as well? alternatively, it can be used for contrast - if someone sucks up to their friends but treats people they don't know like trash, that shows something about that person. or if your main characters think Character A is evil, having a scene where Character A treats acquaintances well could show that they really aren't that bad.
if you want to show how the friendship developed, showing the “acquintances” stage might be a good idea!!

part three: close friends
now, for close friends! these are the people that you immediately want to talk to when something happens, your friends who know the most about you, the ones you might trust with your life.
a problem that i see a lot in books is that two characters “just are” friends. we don't know what good traits they see in each other, we don't know how they met, and we're just supposed to accept that they are friends, even though we don't know why at all! it's kinda annoying, and something you should try to avoid in your writing.
you don't need to show how they met - that's not a requirement - but you definitely should show WHY they are friends. do they share an interest? are they similar in some way? did they grow up together and know the most about each other? why do they (platonically) love each other?
this goes for chosen family as well, and perhaps more - choosing people as your actual family is much more drastic. why did your characters choose to become a family instead of just being friends?
also, when you're writing about friends, be sure to show how familiar they are with each other. this can be through light banter and jokes, or through hugs, or through whatever (think love languages again). for inspiration, look at how you interact with your friends, or how people around you act with their friends!

part four: romantic relations
i'll be honest. i've never been in one of these - i haven't dated or anything. however, i have friends who love each other, and i have read tons of bad romance books so….. good enough??
the line between romantic and platonic relationships are pretty blurred, but i think that there's just a different feeling that people might have. of course, tho, we go back to love - it's not a feeling, it's a choice.
so why did they decide to date? what's so good about them that they love each other that much? how did they take their relationship - quickly or slowly?
also, no romantic relationships are perfect. what sort of troubles did it go through? what did the partners do to work it out? think of all of this - how hard did they work to make their relationship work?
and if the relationship ends,,, how do the people react? some people break up amically (with good vibes), while other people hate each other over it. that's a good way to show what sort of people they are - are they the type to hold grudges, or do they forget and forgive? remember that relationships ultimately show more about the people in them - this is a great opportunity for that!

BONUS ROUNDDDDDD: LGBTQ RELATIONSHIPS
i think the thing to remember with lgbtq relationships (a gay relationship, a lesbian relationship, a relationship with a trans person in it, or maybe even a poly relationship) is that at the base, they are all relationships. they have all the things i talked about above. the difference is that lgbtq relationships usually face more troubles - wondering if the other person even likes your gender, wondering if your partner will accept you for who you are, wondering if the people around you will hurt you for it or not.
i think the best thing you could do is ask someone around you who is lgbtq and asking them what they think. scratch is a great place for it, or if there's someone you know somewhere else, please ask them (if they're comfortable with it, of course). and if you're planning to try to publish your book, hiring and paying a sensitivity checker is a decent idea - those are people who'll read through your writing to make sure that it isn't rude or demeaning to oppressed groups.

alright!
good luck with all your relationship writing, and with your relationships as well! i wish you the best of fortunes (:

July SWC Workshop || Relationships

In this daily, I did multiple instances of different relationships; using characters from my warrior cats fanfiction.

Relationship 1: Family

Silverwind was organizing the morning hunting and border patrols when her head began to hurt. It’s probably nothing, she thought, just a simple headache, it will clear up later today. Throughout the day, the headache kept coming back and hurting even worse than before. She decided to go to the medicine den to see if there were any herbs to help her. When she stepped inside, Frostleaf was there to greet her.
“What’s wrong?” her brother asked concernedly.
“I’m having a horrible headache,” Silverwind mewed.
“When did it start?” he questioned.
“Just this morning,” she replied.
“Then why didn’t you come to me sooner?!” Frostleaf mewed in exasperation. Without waiting for her reply, Frostleaf began to dig through the herb store to try to find something that could help his sister. There! He spotted some feverfew in the back of the herb store, a little dry, but it still had its healing juices. He gave some of it to Silverwind and instructed her to get some rest.
“Ok,” she mewed in reply, “thank you.”

Relationship 2: Family and mate. Bramblewhisker thought of his mate, Featherbreeze and his sister, Silverwind and did something nice for them.

Then, Bramblewhisker was called by Starlight, who was filling in for Silverwind, to go on a hunting patrol. I guess seeing Silverwind’s kits will have to wait. He thought. He padded out of the camp entrance and into the forest. He made his way to his favorite clearing, where there was always good prey. As he stepped into the clearing, he saw a huge crow. Perfect! He thought, Maybe I’ll bring this to Featherbreeze and Silverwind. He crouched down low, and made his way through the grass toward the crow. The bird hadn’t noticed him yet. Silently, Bramblewhisker leaped into the air and the bird let out a strangled “caw!” before it fell to the ground with a thump. Bramblewhisker dragged the body of the bird back to camp. He decided to take it right to the nursery to bring it to Featherbreeze and Silverwind.

Relationship 3: Close friends

Soon, Bramblewhisker and Featherbreeze’s kits were old enough to leave the nursery and play with the other kits. Pebblekit was the first to become friends with them.
“Hey! Honeykit! Mosskit!” she called excitedly.
The two kits turned to look at her. “What is it?” they asked.
“Let’s go exploring! I found something really cool that I want to show you!” Pebblekit mewed.
“Ok!” The kits agreed, and they followed Pebblekit into the forest. As they went further and further, Honeykit stopped.
“Are you sure this is ok?” she mewed tentatively.
“Of course it is!” Pebblekit dismissed, “After all, we’re all together so we won’t get lost.”
“Oh, ok then,” Honeykit was a little calmer. They continued through the forest. As they were walking, they spotted a pretty flower on a nearby hill.
“Let’s go get it!” Mosskit mewed, and dashed towards it. She soon let out a shriek as the ground dropped beneath her paws. Pebblekit grabbed her by the scruff and hauled her back onto solid ground.
“What were you thinking, fluff-for-brains? You could’ve gotten yourself killed!” Pebblekit scolded, but she was more scared than angry.
“Sorry,” Mosskit hung her head. “I just was so excited that I forgot to watch where I was going.”
“It doesn’t matter now,” Honeykit soothed, “Let’s continue on our adventure!”

*I tried to depict a close friend/platonic relationship while putting emphasis on the dynamics of the group

The bell rang and I leaped out of my seat, trying to half-sprint towards the cafeteria without getting a hall pass. As I wove my way between pods of loitering upperclassmen, the lunchroom finally came into view. A good thing, too; people were already claiming tables.
Grabbing whatever objects I had that could be used as a marker, I took four tables in the same proximity, two seats at each: the precise amount needed for all of my close friends and I.
I sat down and took a breath to recover from my daily noon-time run. While waiting for the rest of my group to wander down from their classes on the second floor, I entertained myself by attempting to guess who would be sitting where today.
Kendra and Kiara would be sitting together at the far table, for sure. The two of them had been best friends since elementary school, and separating them was next to impossible. They were the “mentally unstable” and “darkened humor” friends of the group: it may seem like the epitome of a toxic relationship, at first, but those two tended to think on the same wavelength.
Next up, Sarah and Marie. The two dancers usually sat together, seemingly by default, at the second farthest table. They were polite to each other but not as close with each other as they were with others.
Then, there was Bailey and Mya. They had grown closer as the year went on, which was nice to see. Bailey was responsible, friendly, and opened-minded. Mya, she would kick your shins and usually scared Kendra with this demeanor. Nonetheless, those two bonded surprisingly well and had more in common than you would expect.
Finally, there was Maggie and I. We had only known each other for a year but had “clicked” pretty quickly. She was responsible, yes, but also had a certain outlook on the world that could be described as innocent, but not naive.
There were sub-groups within our “squad” that were more platonic than others, but together we were all a family. And, to put it frankly, it was simply great.
I smiled, watching my friends come down the stairs and speed walk towards our tables.
They sat exactly as expected, and tossed their bags onto the floor. From across the table, Maggie gave me a few gestures that may appear like some foreign variation of sign language. I grinned and gave her a thumbs up. Bailey glanced over at us, visibly confused. It was obvious she didn’t understand the “language” we had constructed; it was a mere solution we had used to adapt to the lunch room’s outrageous volume.
I looked around at our odd little clique: Kendra and Kiara cracking up, while Sarah and Marie attempted to explain basic ballet positions to Bailey and Mya. Or Maggie struggling to decide whether to eat chips or cookies, thanks to her indecisiveness. Though I was uncertain about how long it would all last, I took pleasure at the moment while knowing that here, I finally had a family.

Sooo Im not all that comfortable to share ALL of my writingbut i will show a little bit— “You lost?”

Cam dropped her suitcase, which hit hard on her thin shoes. She clapped her hand over her mouth to stop herself from yelling. Ro, raised her eyebrow. “No need to be all yelpy, Butterfingers.”
Butterfingers? Cam thought. What sorta dumb name is that?!
“Where’s your partner?” Cam asked. She knew Ro was partnered up with a girl with short black hair and glasses, but she was no where to be seen.
Ro scrunched her face. “Oh, her. She was lame and I abandoned her, and found you.”
She blinked a few times. Cam didn’t see Ro as a type of person who would do that.
“What if she gets lost? You shouldn’t have ‘abandoned’ her, Ro.”
Ro yawned and rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry Butterfingers, that glasses girl found some strangely decorated gift box we saw earlier.”

Okay so that was one part, which was sort of a ‘forced friendship” if that makes sense
Next up is just ‘friend’

Ro groaned. “Speak up, Glasses!”
She looked up and looked at Ro, face to face. Although Cam didn’t see it before, the girl had bright marigold eyes.
“I said, that she is the Princess of these Isles, so watch your tongue.”
Roxie gasped. “Princess Carisa, I’ve heard of you—“
Carisa raised her hand, to stop Ro from finishing her sentence. “Number one, it is Cari, but you can call me Princess.” Cari started. The girl next to her smiled, giggling. “Number two, who are you to be lecturing my friend Viola about speaking up?” Cari threw her arm over Viola.

Platonic Relationship/Best Friends
(SPOILER ALERT I kinda took this from harry potter bk 6 when Hermione says that he can't do it alone)
I stood in front of the door, steeling myself. I had to do this. I had to take the first step. But I didn't realize I wouldn't be alone. Footsteps thudded on the floor behind me, and as I turned around, I saw my best friend Naomi hurrying down the hall with an armful of books. Words came tumbling out of her in a rush. “My mom almost caught me- I nearly got lost- what are you doing- I thought I wouldn't make it in time-” I held up my hand to pause the river of words. “This is the iron door. Inside is- who knows? We have to find out- for your sake, my sake, and the world's sake.” Naomi paused for a second. “I have no idea what you are talking about, but whatever it is, I'm going with you.” “Are you sure?” I hesitated. “It's 99.9% likely that it's extremely dangerous.” “All the better!” Naomi was practically bouncing. “I don't want you getting hurt, and you can't stop me. Now let's go! Let's go!” I sighed and leaned on the door, letting it slowly ease open.

Platonic relationships/best friends

I fidgeted nervously in my seat, my legs shaking and all, I glanced at the clock, 10 minutes,10 minutes until I was out of this prison.
“ mysteria! Pay attention young lady!”
“Sorry!” I sat up in my seat and prayed for those ten long minutes to pass.
Finally the school bell rang the sweet sounds of freedom. I ran outside dodging all the people who had just got out of hypnosis class, let's just say they are n't known for hypnosis specialists. I pushed open the bright orange double doors and ran down the marble stairs as fast as I could. I had to make it to the airport in time! I ran quickly down the gravel streets dodging cars and running at lightning speed,I needed to get there, hawke and willow were coming back today! They had been gone for two months in mastra island, their private island. I suddenly tripped, I fell down and scraped my knee, there was small amounts of blood trickling down my leg. I groaned and stood up, my knee hurt a lot, but there was no time! I had to see them. I had missed them so much, Hawke especially. After 15 minutes of grueling pain I finally arrived at the airport just in time. I watched as they walked out of the airport, their family looking so perfect and setting such high standards for the rest of the families in haloment. I ran up to the willow and hawk and hugged them.
“Misti! I missed you!” Hawke exclaimed
Willow blushed and said “me too”
“ well i sure didn't” said a stern voice from up above
We all scrambled to our feet
“ I can't have my children hanging out with such a rambunctious child. Come along now you two”
I watched as Hawke and Willow followed their father to their limousine. Then I saw a hawk make a gesture, his hand shaping into a tree. He was symbolizing for me to meet him and willow at their tree house! I scrambled to my feet, my knee still throbbing and climbed the ladders up to the rooftops of the buildings, this was my short cut, I jumped over the rooftops until i got to the alley way of the back of their families house, i slid down the cement shoot and landed right in there backyard, i quickly scrambled to her treehouse and watched as they climbed the ladder. When Willow got up she blushed and said “you got a little something on your cheek” and then proceeded to wipe it off. Hawke came up next and whispered “ Misti you don't know how much I missed you!” smiled, i remembered the first time we met, no one expected us to be friends, me just being his job. But the second we met in our living room we clicked there was something different about him. He taught me how to use magic after figuring out I was a sorceress, he was my best friend. Willow was Hawkes brother and I got to know her better after Hawke introduced me to her. The first time we met she was crying and showing her true emotions. People say family and friendship are different things but these friends are my true family.

This is pretty good! I am a little confused though. What are they doing? How do they feel about each other? Does Ro think Cam is annoying? Does Cam think Ro is mean? There is little clarification.

Where are they? An airport? A summer camp? I'm not sure.

Also, instead of ‘I said, that’. I would remove the comma, maybe add italics or bold.
