Remove project size limit

I was working on a project when a size limit exceeded box popped up. If this has happened to you then I think you would agree that everyone could make bigger and better projects if the size limit was removed.

No support. It's to avoid taking up too much space on the servers. I'd like to see a higher limit, but not the absence of a limit.

The size limit for Scratch 2.0 project is 50 MB, and uses a much more efficient storage system when compared to 1.4. What exactly did you add to exceed that limit?

Tons of sprites and animations for a Half life 3 promo in portal 2 instructor along with a portal 2 game that goes from beginning to end. I was testing the limits of what is possible in scratch. It did not work.

Maybe the project size could be increased for non-new-scratchers. (Scratchers that aren't new) So the limit for new scratchers is 50MB, but maybe normal scratchers could have 75MB or something?

I think that that is a good idea!

Remove project size limit

Hey,

I personaly hate the 50MB limit on Scratch 2.0 offline editor: In the online editor I can understand to put a limit, but I have a project with 95,4 MB, which I've done on Scratch 1.4 Editor, cause there is no limit. This annoying limit in 2.0, is the only reason, why I don't use Scratch 2.0. I think the 2.0 is better, faster and has more opportunitys, and I would love to import my project to 2.0 and work on it, for a better performance. But so I'm forced to work on 1.4.

What is even stupider is that the limit which by the way is 30 MB applies to the offline editor. I am working on a fnaf fangame and I have about 500 gb free on my computer. All I need to add is one backdrop. I don't want to use the online editor because I have a stand alone EXE creator app for SB2 files. I'm sure MIT could make the limit 300 mb if they wanted.

Also, support for removing a limit in the offline editor. Honestly, other than your own computer, you're not hurting anyone by creating a 100MB project in the offline editor. I think the limit should only be applied if the user tries to upload it.

I kinda like working with the limits, though Makes me feel like an NES developer, back when they had to be economic with their data :3 Goombas are just one picture, flipped to look like they're walking in SMB1. Game Boy Zelda games were also very economic about that sort of thing. You could see lots of that sprite flipping. But yeah, offline, maybe you should just be notified that you're surpassing the limit, and that you won't be able to upload without some trimming.

Really? I didn't know it was flipping in SMB1…

Anyway, no support for the suggestion. As TheHockeyist said, the limit's there for a reason - so projects don't take up loads of server space.

No support for making the limit higher. 50MB is plenty for big projects. If you need more space, consider turning your costumes into .jpeg files and adjusting the compression (just the difference between 100% and 99% quality can be significant in most cases, with almost no visible loss). Also, unless you need size hacks then don't use bitmaps that you convert to SVG via the convert to vector button or a tool like inkscape. It makes a 33% size increase. Also, remove unnecessary assets, and know that duplicate assets in different sprites are stored at the same location on the server so I'm pretty sure it doesn't count in your total size.

Let's do some math…

With almost +10,000,000 projects shared, and about 56,185,458 unshared projects, Scratch is growing each day. Let's estimate each project takes up about 1 mb

1000 kb = 1 mb
1000 mb = 1 gb
1000 gb = 1 tb

66,185,458,000 kb
66,185,458 mb
66,185.458 gb
66.185458 tb

Now, each project gets 1 gb,

66,185,458,000,000 kb
66,185,458,000 mb
66,185,458 gb
66,185.458 tb

Now, that seems unrealistic, right? Now, lets hop to 2017, when Scratch has more users and more popularity, and there are 1,000,000,000 projects.
1 gb per project.

1,000,000,000,000,000 kb
1,000,000,000,000 mb
1,000,000,000 gb
1,000,000 tb

If you have 1,000,000 Terabytes laying around, I'll support, but as of now…
